Chapter 17

Daniel returned home close to teatime. The weather had turned, and a gusty wind was blowing, dark clouds blanketing the sky. Daniel handed his umbrella, coat, gloves, and hat to Tilda and walked into the drawing room, taking his favorite seat by the hearth.

Sarah had been reading by the window, but came to join him, her eyes searching his face for clues. “How did it go? Did you learn anything?” she asked.

“Sarah, do you think me dull?” Daniel blurted out and instantly regretted his outburst.

Sarah’s eyebrows lifted in surprise. “What a question! Why would you ask me that?” she asked, watching him intently.

“Well, do you?”

“No, I don’t think you dull,” Sarah replied. Daniel thought he saw a hint of a smile tugging at her lips.

“Do you think I’m oblivious to your needs?” he asked, plunging deeper into the awkward and potentially dangerous subject.

“Daniel, what in the world?” Sarah exclaimed, arching her eyebrow in the way she did when she was puzzled.

“Please, Sarah. I need to know.”

Sarah sighed, a look of resignation passing over her lovely features. “Sometimes, but I think you’re equally oblivious to your own needs.”

“I am?”

Sarah nodded. “Daniel, I know I forced you to give up your dreams when I insisted that we move back to Birch Hill after Felix…” Her voice trailed off for a moment, but she collected herself and continued. “I was distraught and couldn’t bear to remain in a place where he…where we had lost him. Perhaps I was being selfish, but I needed to hide from the world for a while in order to heal. But you never felt that same need; you had to act, to keep busy, to turn your mind to other things. You ignored your own needs in favor of mine. You allowed me to mourn in a way I needed to in order to find the strength to go on.”

“I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying, Sarah,” Daniel said softly.

“You’re wasted here. You were a good policeman, and you would have had a future with the Metropolitan Police had we remained in London.”

“But we didn’t.”

“No,” Sarah said, watching him. “But I think it’s time for you to see to your own desires.”

Daniel shook his head in confusion. He’d intended to ask Sarah about her needs, to make certain she didn’t feel frustrated or ignored, but somehow, they’d ended up talking about what was best for him. No wonder men never really knew what their wives were thinking; the confounding creatures always managed to turn the conversation in the direction they wanted it to go.

“Everything I desire is right here,” Daniel said softly, watching her. “I would like us to have another child. Is that something you might want as well?”

Sarah smiled. “Yes, I would like us to have a child, Danny.”

She rarely called him that, and his heart melted when she did because it was a sign of emotion, of deep affection. “And I hope we will. But having a child won’t satisfy you. You have a keen mind and a lot of ambition.
